Sun. Feb. 5, 2012:
Why does Ron Paul appeal to so many young people? Hopefully it is not the tinge of racism in past writings under his name. Nor is it likely his zany particulars of abolishing the Fed, returning to the Gold Standard, eliminating all our armed forces except a few missile-armed submarines, and abolishing many federal government agencies & departments altogether. [Read Nicholas Lemann's "Comment: Enemy of the State," on pp. 19-20 of the Jan. 9, 2012 New Yorker.]
But he does tap into youngsters' innate sense that something is seriously wrong with the status quo, and that tinkering with our current system via 2013's President Tweedledee or President Tweedledum will not prevent the post-9/11 "decline & fall" of our "recession-battered country" -- a la Edward Gibbon's Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire. [Read Adam Kirsch's "The Empire Strikes Back: Rome and Us," pp. 68-74 of the same New Yorker issue.]
If "politics is the art of the possible," then Ron Paul's tinker-free revolutionary platform is useless, other than inspiring our next generation to think big and Return to the Basics -- back from today's version of the autocratic, bloated Roman Empire, to the USA's 1789 version of a flourishing Roman Republic in 509 B.C.
If only Ron Paul had proposed the following, even I might vote for him.
Given the nearly universal cynicism & distrust toward 2 if not all 3 branches of our federal government in 2012:
The next incumbent Congress & Presidency, elected [and bought & sold] to office in 2016, should sacrifice their 2018 & 2020 re-elections, by driving out the money-changers from our democratic republic's temple, and by foreswearing loyalty to party and replacing it with loyalty to what will really strengthen our nation & our planet. No political donation over $1.00.
The groundswell of gratitude would be so great, such a Congress & Presidency might get re-elected by acclamation despite their own self-denying pledges.
OUR POLITICIANS' UNIVERSAL SELF-SACRIFICE OF RE-ELECTION, FOR AT LEAST ONE CYCLE, IS THE KEY TO REAL & DESPERATELY NEEDED GOVERNMENTAL CLEANSING.
